Fibromyalgia: Gaining a Hopeful Perspective

Affecting more than 3 million each year, mostly females, Fibromyalgia is a chronic musculoskeletal condition that is often misunderstood. Generally, individuals with Fibromyalgia experience muscle and joint pain across many areas of the body. While these symptoms may be managed to some degree, Fibromyalgia is also linked to depression and anxiety, making it about more than sore muscles and joints. At Houston Health and Wellness, we take an alternative approach to treating patients with Fibromyalgia, helping them gain a hopeful perspective on life.

Non-Conventional Alternatives
When it comes to non-conventional alternatives for treating Fibromyalgia, the greatest approach is found in activities that incorporate both the mind and body. For example, swimming, yoga, or even walking represents low-impact options that also center the mind. While cardiovascular activity is a natural remedy for relieving pain, the low-impact nature of these exercises encourage individuals to focus, which aids in developing better coping strategies.

The Feldenkrais Method, which is an awareness of movement, also combines simple exercises while increasing self-awareness. Reaching, lying to sitting, and turning the head are examples of this method. These can range from easy to complex, based on an individual’s level of comfort. Yet, the idea is to help the patient focus on positions and postures that may be causing them pain. Once they understand the cause of their pain, they can begin to develop healthier movements and postures.

Also helping patients manage the often-debilitating symptoms of Fibromyalgia is Acupuncture and Massage.

As individuals enter treatment with an alternative approach, they will also need to consider their nutrition. The following are considered helpful in combating the effects of Fibromyalgia:

  • Organic Fruits
  • Ginger
  • Tumeric
  • Omega 3 Fatty Acids
  • Magnesium
  • Calcium
  • Malic Acid

If you are suffering from the instability of Fibromyalgia, there is hope for you at Houston Health and Wellness. We provide individualized holistic treatments with the goal of helping patients achieve maximum health. With an approach that searches for the root causes of your pain, we are dedicated to helping heal the body at its source. Are you ready to begin a journey towards ultimate wellness? Call us today.

Your Neck Pain

Though very common, neck pain is not normal. Whether due to injury, a vehicle accident, or misalignment of the spine, the body reacts by immobilizing the area under stress. For those with neck pain, this may result in muscle spasms and stiffness. Yet, there is hope. Using a holistic three-prong approach, Houston Health & Wellness combines chiropractic care, physical therapy, and nutrition to put patients on the right path to a pain free life.

Chiropractic care begins with careful review and consideration of a patient’s health history, including medications taken and lifestyle. In addition, a complete physical examination and x-rays are taken. For patients experiencing neck pain, Chiropractic adjustments, or manipulation, involve realigning the vertebrae in the cervical region. This restores movement and function, which leads to less pain. Often, physical therapy is used along with chiropractic care. This may include specific stretches to improve range of motion, or targeted exercises to increase neck strength. Muscles play a major role in maintaining the integrity of the lumbar and cervical spine. This is why chiropractic and physical therapy work hand-in-hand. Even so, a major component that eases neck pain long-term is nutrition.

Can Proper Nutrition Ease Neck Pain?

We all know that a healthy, balanced diet containing vitamins and minerals is best for overall health. Yet, the following vitamins are particularly helpful for spinal health.

Vitamin A: Helping promote the formation of bone, Vitamin A can be found in beef, calf and chicken livers, dairy, orange fruits (apricots, nectarines), and vegetables such as carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach.

Vitamin B12: Known for promoting healthy bone marrow, Vitamin B12 is found in liver, fish, red meats, eggs, yogurt and cheese.

Vitamin C: Rich in collagen, which encourages tissue growth needed to support bones, Vitamin C is in fruits (strawberries, kiwi, citrus), and broccoli, spinach, and potatoes.

Vitamin D: Improving the absorption of Calcium, Vitamin D is found in egg yolks, fish oil, and milk products.

Vitamin K: Helping the body use Calcium properly, Vitamin K is found in pork, green leafy vegetables such as kale and broccoli, and some dairy products.

Brain Training and Neurofeedback

Millions of Americans suffer from anxiety, fears, panic and nervousness. Some cannot hide their anxiety, while others appear calm, yet deal with an anxious, stirring mind. While medications are a popular option for treatment, Brain Training (Neurofeedback) is a powerful tool used to curb the brain’s reaction to stress.

It’s believed that the roots of anxiety are addiction, perfectionism, and controlling tendencies. Yet, there are many ways that anxiety manifests itself. Consider the following:

  • Constant worry
  • Nagging fear
  • Negative thoughts
  • Heart palpitations (racing heart)
  • Sweaty palms or feet
  • Shallow breathing
  • Feelings of anxiousness, or feeling overwhelmed
  • Obsessions
  • Insomnia
  • Busy mind

Changing Your Brainwaves

While brain training may sound like a new concept, it is not. As a popular anxiety reduction method in the 1970’s, it lost momentum over time, due to changes in insurance companies and coverage. Today, with incredible advancements in the knowledge of brain waves and patterns, it is even more effective for teaching healthy brain responses.

Brain training measures the pace and rhythms of the brain through an EEG brain map. Suppose a brain map recording shows a fast brain pattern. The result of an excessive brain pattern is often anxiety, fear, and even panic. Many individuals with fast brain patterns will say to themselves, “I can’t seem to quiet my mind.”

The good news is that the brain can be taught to recreate balance, returning to calm. Using a computer game, patients learn exactly how they are responding. In turn, they learn suggestions for how to change their responses. This is achieved through a series of neurofeedback sessions. The goal is for the patient to be able to minimize unhealthy responses that lead to anxiety, replacing them with reactions that bring stability to their mind and body.

Houston Health and Wellness is committed to personalized treatments with an integrative approach to mental health, including anxiety, fear, panic, and nervousness. We work to identify triggers that are below the surface such as physical, nutritional, environmental, social, genetic, and spiritual that may control the brain’s reaction. Call Houston Health and Wellness today for a consultation. You deserve to find peace for your mind and body.

Sciatica: Getting To The Root Of The Problem

Pain radiating along the path of the sciatic nerve, extending from the lower back through the hips, buttocks, and legs is known as Sciatica. One should know—Sciatica is simply a term used to describe the symptoms of pain in these areas, and is likely from a herniated disc, degeneration of the spine, or spinal stenosis. Thus, Sciatica is a result of a pre-existing medical condition.

If you’ve experienced pain that is isolated on one side of the buttock or leg, chances are, you’ve experienced sciatic nerve pain to some degree. Many describe sciatic leg pain as burning, tingling, or a dull ache. Some claim that the pain is worse when sitting or driving. When this occurs, some claim to experience weakness, numbness, or increased discomfort when trying to move their leg or foot. Because Sciatica involves pain that varies and is infrequent, it can range from an irritating ache to a stabbing, debilitating condition. The symptoms associated with Sciatica depend on the location of the specific underlying condition of the individual.

Greater understanding of Sciatica begins with some knowledge about the lower spinal region and nerve roots. The lumbar spine, particularly lumbar 4 and 5, along with sacral segments 1, 2, and 3, create a “bundle” forming the sciatic nerve. As these nerves extend throughout the legs, they assist with motor and sensory functions. If the nerve root is compressed at the junction where these nerves are gathered, individuals will experience pain and discomfort. For example, if a nerve is compressed at lumbar 4, symptoms will often appear in the thigh. Moreover, if a nerve is compressed at sacral segment 1, symptoms will appear in the outer part of the foot. In this case, a person may complain of difficulty raising their heel off of the ground. Even so, patients may experience a combination of symptoms if more than one nerve is compressed.

A comprehensive evaluation of a patient’s pain, while taking into account underlying medical conditions and neurological components is critical to getting to the root of the problem. Successful non-surgical Sciatica treatments include chiropractic therapy, acupuncture, and massage therapy.
Houston Health and Wellness combines natural and holistic means to relieve pain and Sciatica symptoms. We understand that there is not a “one size fits all” when it comes to treatment of Sciatica. Each individual suffers differently. Yet, you’ll be relieved to know that your pain stops here. Call us today to begin the journey towards maximum optimal health and function.

Candidiasis: Candida Overgrowth

Chances are, you’re familiar with the condition referred to as a yeast infection, as it’s particularly common, especially in women. What you may not know is that the medical term for this infection is Candidiasis, and women are not the only ones susceptible to it. Candidiasis is Candida Overgrowth, and can affect men, women, and children. Candida overgrowth presents itself in a variety of pesky, health-related ways.

In essence, candida is harmless (in normal amounts), and exists in the mouth, vagina, rectum, and digestive tract, along with other bacterium. Yet, when levels are high, candida can become invasive, and wreak havoc on the blood, heart, and even the brain.

To help understand and combat candida overgrowth and its affects, consider the following early symptoms of candida:

Vaginal Yeast Infections and Urinary Tract Infections: Candida overgrowth contributes to vaginal yeast infections, resulting in thick discharge and irritation. In addition, overgrowth of this yeast can result in frequent UTI’s (urinary tract infections).

Mood Swings: While mood disorders are neurologically based, there is evidence that rampant bacteria in the gut can affect the neurological system. Candida overgrowth may contribute to irritability, anxiety, panic disorders, and depression.

Fatigue: Specifically noted in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, joint pain, headaches, and brain fog are present. These components may point straight to high levels of candida.

Gastrointestinal Problems: Bloating, cramping, gas, and irregularity are common gastrointestinal complaints. When experienced over time, however, these pesky stomach conditions may indicate candida overgrowth.

Sinus Infections: As excessive amounts of candida cause problems in the gut, they are also linked to reoccurring sore throats, congestion, and allergies.

Houston Health and Wellness uses natural methodology to assess and treat patients, and we understand that each person deserves personalized care for their symptoms. This integrated approach allows us to make important connections between your symptoms and your lifestyle habits. If candida overgrowth is to blame for your health concerns, we will come alongside you to help eliminate overproduction of this yeast, and help build up healthy bacteria. Please call us today to schedule your consultation. It’s time for you to feel better.

Reasons To Avoid Fad Diets

When you want to lose weight as quickly as possible, it can be tempting to peruse the Internet or pharmacy for the latest fad diets on the market. However, these quick fixes for weight loss are often diet plans or products that ignore potential health dangers and produce only temporary results. Fad diets also tend to make unrealistic claims just to get consumers to buy their product. Many of them also end up in a loss of water weight, which gives false results when it comes to true, healthy weight loss.

Weight loss should be viewed with consideration to your whole body health. For healthy, effective and long-term weight management, avoid fad diets at all costs. Here are just a few reasons why fad diets may do more harm than good:

Not a Long-Term Solution: As mentioned above, many fad diets promise to help you lose a certain number of pounds in a short amount of time. In many cases, this is just water weight. Fad diets are not a sustainable solution for long-term use.

Potentially Dangerous: Not only are many fad diet products not approved by the FDA, but many of these plans encourage consumers to exclude certain foods or food groups from their diet. Neglecting to eat a balanced diet with nutrients from all of the major foods groups can pose a serious threat to your overall health over time.

A Cookie Cutter Approach: Perhaps the most significant downfall of a fad diet is that it assumes a “one size fits all” approach. Each person has a unique body with distinctive differences in their metabolic system, genetic tendencies, and hormonal balance. Therefore, the same diet plan that works for one person may be ineffective or even dangerous for the next.

Ignores Medical Reasons for Your Weight Loss Struggle: There are many medical conditions that cause weight loss, including thyroid disorder, hormone imbalance, diabetes and more. Neglecting to consider or address these conditions can be detrimental to your weight loss journey, especially if you are choosing a fad diet that aggravates an existing medical condition.

If you are experiencing dizziness, dehydration, constipation or diarrhea, constant hunger or mood changes, your fad diet may compromising your health, despite what the scale is telling you. Choose Houston Health & Wellness for a customized, all-encompassing weight loss plan. We consider potential causes such as glucose/insulin imbalance, hormonal imbalance, thyroid issues, malabsorption, leaky gut, toxic overload and other factors that can impact a patient’s inability to lose weight despite proper diet and exercise.
