Neck & Back Pain Treatment

Neck and back pain are common, but not normal.  Often misalignments of vertebrae of the spine are normally where back or neck pain begins.  Most commonly this occurs from bad posture and or a trauma such as a motor vehicle accident, slips and falls or a sports injury.  Normally if it’s a simple strained muscle it will resolve on its own within a relatively short period of time, generally in less than a week.  If left uncorrected it can lead to preeminent arthritic changes and disc herniation.  Even if those components are present we have great success in restoring a patient’s normal pain-free function.

Back pain and or low back pain is the single leading cause of disability worldwide. Over one half of all working Americans admit to having back pain symptoms each year. Back pain is one of the most common reasons people miss work or miss out on activities and life events. Billions of dollars are spent each year on back pain. Experts estimates that over 80 percent of the population will suffer from back pain at some point in their life. Most back pain is really a chronic problem. All the episodes are considered to be acute. When examined properly and evaluated most physicians will admit that the back pain is an ongoing process that finally got to the point where the bodies unable to compensate for it any longer.

The back itself is a very complicated structure that is comprised of many muscles, ligaments, cartilage tendons, nerves and bony structures. When the body is receiving a threat to vital tissue generally that is a disk or a nerve. When the body receives a threat in which the nerves and disc are involved the body’s reaction is to immobilize the structure to protect it. This protection causes muscle spasms and compression of the structures that are injured in first place. So, it creates a vicious cycle. Unfortunately the body is doing its job but the patient is experiencing a great amount of pain. Although most patients want to come in because of the pain they’re not even thinking about the reason that it has happened. When we work with the patient we discover what the root cause is so that we can reverse the cause. We want to get the structure to function normally again so that the patient doesn’t have to suffer with the pain.

Another main goal is to avoid surgery and long-term pharmaceutical treatment of the problem with our holistic treatments. Low back pain responds very well to the combination of chiropractic care, physical therapy and nutrition as a three pronged approach to correcting the problem. If I can see a change in the dynamics of the patient’s problem within the first 3 to 4 weeks I know I’m going down the right path. The most common changes will be an improvement of the overall condition, a change in the character of symptoms and the location. If I can see those dynamics happening in that first 3 to 4 weeks I know we’re going to be able to change the structure. Patients appreciate this because they have some means of measuring what is actually taking place. This is why I believe that objective testing should always be used to determine the progress of the case with the patient. Objective testing like x-rays and computerized range of motion and muscle testing is a great way to establish a baseline so you have some means of objectively assessing the progress of the case. Most patients coming to the office are concerned about the pain. Pain is probably the easiest thing to get under control. The actual cause of why they have the pain is where the majority of the work is needed to be done.
